Dudley Cooper, owner of Ocean View Amusement Park, left his archives to Old Dominion University. The numerous boxes held there contain a wealth of information related to Ocean View, Seaside Beach and Seaview Beach. This letter was one written to the Globe Poster Company regarding advertising for Seaview Beach. More information on the Cooper collection can be found here

Seaview was a popular spot for fraternal formals and events. Organizations such as the Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi regularly used the facility. The photograph above is from an original copy of the August 18, 1947 issue of Life Magazine. Life Magazine’s digital archives can be found here.

Seaview Beach and Amusement Park was just one of the historically African-American beaches in Hampton Roads. Others included City Beach, Ocean Breeze, and Bay Shore. An interesting article on the Bay Shore Hotel and Beach in Hampton can be found in this Daily Press article. Another story with local interviews on Bay Shore can be found at Zeal Harris’s blog at this link.
